Plivo

Set up Plivo as your telephony provider for outbound and inbound voice calls with zoxaAI.

What you'll learn

How to configure Plivo as a telephony provider in zoxaAI, including the automatic application creation feature, credential setup, and inbound call routing.

Plivo

Plivo is a cloud communications platform offering voice and SMS APIs with competitive pricing. zoxaAI integrates with Plivo for both outbound and inbound calling using Plivo's bidirectional audio streaming.

Auth TokenPlivo Console > Dashboard (top of page)YesYesYour Plivo account Auth Token
Application IDPlivo Console > Voice > ApplicationsNoNoA Plivo Application ID. If left blank, zoxaAI auto-creates one on save.

Setup

Open the Telephony Page

Navigate to Telephony in the zoxaAI sidebar.

Add a New Configuration

Click Add Configuration. Select Plivo from the provider dropdown.

Enter Your Credentials

Paste your Auth ID and Auth Token from the Plivo Console.

Application ID is optional. If you leave it blank, zoxaAI automatically creates a Plivo Application for you (see below).

Name and Save

Give the configuration a name (e.g., "Plivo Production") and click Save.

Add Phone Numbers

Right after you save, zoxaAI opens the new configuration and fetches the voice numbers on your Plivo account. Click Add next to the ones you want, or Add all. You can fetch again any time with Fetch from Plivo in the Phone Numbers section.

To add a number by hand instead, click Add phone number and enter it in E.164 format:

+14155552671
+12125551234

Only voice-enabled numbers are listed. A number linked to a different Plivo application shows an info icon: outbound calls work, but inbound calls reach zoxaAI only after you link the number to this configuration's application in the Plivo console.

Auto-Created Application

When you do not provide an Application ID, zoxaAI automatically creates a Plivo Application during the save process. The auto-created application has:

  • App name: zoxa-<random-id> (e.g., zoxa-a3b2c1d4e5f6)
  • Answer URL: https://your-domain.com/api/v1/telephony/run
  • Answer method: POST

This means inbound calls work immediately for any Plivo number linked to the auto-created application -- no additional webhook configuration needed.

Recommended approach

For most users, leaving the Application ID blank and letting zoxaAI auto-create it is the simplest setup path. The application is created with the correct inbound URL pre-configured.

Outbound Calls

Plivo outbound calls use the Plivo Voice API. Audio is streamed bidirectionally over WebSocket in audio/x-mulaw;rate=8000 format using Plivo's Stream feature.

SourceDescription
Test callsPlace a test call from the agent editor
API callsUse POST /api/v1/call with your API key
CampaignsBulk outbound dialing across a contact list

Inbound Calls

Plivo fully supports inbound calling. If you used the auto-created application, inbound calls work immediately.

If you are using a pre-existing Plivo Application, configure it manually:

Open Plivo Console

Go to the Plivo Console and navigate to Voice > Applications.

Set Answer URL

Click your application and set:

  • Answer URL: https://your-domain.com/api/v1/telephony/run
  • Answer Method: POST

Assign an Agent

In the zoxaAI dashboard, go to Telephony > your Plivo configuration and open the phone number (or add it). Select the agent that should answer in the Inbound target dropdown and save.

See Inbound Calling for the full inbound routing guide.
